Having a partner walk out or being the bearer of divorce news is traumatic. You do not need to go through divorce alone. Some people withdraw from their friends and family after divorce and that leaves them with feelings of bitterness and anger. They build walls around themselves, too high for anyone to climb, which can become permanent.

Keeping anger and anxiety bottled up inside can lead to cardiovascular problems and a good laugh can release them. Take a break from all of our smart phone and devices—enjoy the outdoors! Research the local events in your area. Taking them somewhere new: a sporting event, a concert, a tour of a local tourist attraction…Having a blast with your kids is the best medicine. Enjoying an outing is healthy. It’s all about balance.

Although divorce puts a child through a confusing and emotional transition, don’t forget to be involved in their lives. Communicate to your kid’s teachers and volunteer with their classes. Offer to tutor or chaperone field trips. Having an open conversation and just you being there for them is the best thing. Also, give your kids a voice and let them feel acknowledged. Make it safe to talk about their feelings with you. It’s important to be attentive and have an open dialogue. A defensive attitude or  being upset will create an instability so make sure a level ground is present at all times regarding this topic. Discuss what to expect during this transition. For example, what their day to day routine will be like and what will change. It helps them prepare for what’s ahead as much as they can.

Alina, the assistant at Family Matters has personally been in the middle of her parent’s divorce at a young age. “I wish my family had a company like Family Matters in our lives during a rough transition. My parents had a mean and messy divorce that felt it lasted a lifetime. My younger brother and I did not feel like we had a safe place to unleash our built up emotions, except for exchanging words with each other here and there. To see how Kim works miracles with families that are going through what I experienced touches my heart. Her passion for helping others through transitions is truly remarkable.”

We hope you are encouraged to ask for help. You may feel stuck and don’t know where to go from here. You are capable, brave and significant. Even when you feel like the world is against you and you want to shut the world out and just be left alone, don’t run out on your faith. There is light at the end of this tunnel. Just when you think your life is falling apart, it just might be falling together. Instead of thinking why everything is going wrong…change your perspective. Think about what can go right. Open up your mind and your heart. Fall in love with your future because it’s yours to create.
